Hi! And thank you for visiting our blog!
My name is Kaylyn and I’m the co-writer on How to Break a Blog with my friend Brooke.
You can read more about how we started this blog under the “About” tab. As for this section, I’m here to tell you a little but about me.
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a writer. This stemmed from my passion for reading. From a young age I would read stories and after their endings, I would imagine how I would continue the story and (often) put myself into that story. I then started thinking… hey, maybe I can write a book! I distinctly remember the first story I started writing in fifth grade, about a girl who had elemental powers she didn’t understand, until a mysterious boy started showing up in her dreams and enrolled in her high school, speaking of a dire prophesy stating she would destroy his supernatural world and how he would do anything to stop it (all the while, of course, falling madly in love with her).
After writing this story for two years, I canned it. Seventh grade me was not impressed. She was slightly disgusted to find fifth grade me was writing a story that was suspiciously similar to Twilight, even if it didn’t have vampires.
From there I started to branch out. Not just in my writing, but in my reading too. I was no longer stuck on YA Paranormal Romance, instead dipping my toe into historical, thriller, romance, fantasy, magical realism, etc. In late middle school and early high school, I devoured books, often reading five a week. For a time, I stuck to writing poetry and music, unsure of my voice in the world of fiction.
My sophomore year of high school, I picked up the pen again. I wrote a sad story about a broken boy who fakes his own death and a girl who would do anything to find him alive again. After a few months, I canned that one too. It started to sound too much like my favorite romance novelist Kristen Ashley–something I was not happy with. I love Kristen Ashley, but I needed to find my own voice, not make carbon copies of books that were already loved by thousands.
It was early my senior year of high school when I found it. My voice. I began to write a story based on my own life, about a strong but lost girl who didn’t know where she belonged in this expansive world. I started posting chapters on Wattpad. After finding my dear writing friends, Brooke and Jasmin, I took that story down as I wrote the closing chapters, crying and hoping someday it would be published.
I haven’t reached that point yet. That story–I’ve now named Watershed–is currently being rewritten and I’m loving every step of that process.
Finding my voice in the writing world uncovered a passion I had thought I lost. I started to pen more short stories on the side, posting them on Wattpad and even winning an award for one I put my heart and soul into. To this day, my hard drive is full of fantastical worlds and morally grey characters from all different genres that I can’t wait to share with the world.
Which is a huge reason Brooke and I made this site. Here we will share our experiences during our writing process, our querying process, our favorite (and sometimes our least favorite) reads, plus the occasional life update, giving you a glimpse into our minds as we navigate this terrifying industry and this whirlwind of a life.
Thank you for being here on this journey with us.
