During the summer of 2016, Brooke and Kaylyn both created Wattpad writing accounts to share their writing with the members of Colleen Hoover’s CoHort’s on Facebook. During the following spree that Colleen Hoover triggered, Brooke followed Kaylyn and Kaylyn followed Brooke. They both met through a mutual writing friend (shout out to Jasmin Miller who now has her own books published! Find her at: https://www.jasminmiller.com/ ).

Kaylyn was penning one very slow and very sad story, and Brooke was penning several coming of age stories that were complicated and also very sad (something their stories always have in common). After each starting to read each other’s work, it was like friendship at first read. The three writing friends created a group chat that is still going strong to this day.

After a while, Brooke and Kaylyn discovered that they had very similar reading and writing habits, and enjoyed a lot of the same genres. In May of 2017, Brooke and Kaylyn decided to share that love of reading with the world by creating a review site titled “Coast to Coast Reviews”. The site ran strong for a few months before slowly puttering out, being forgotten due to school, work, and just life in general.

A few months ago, Brooke and Kaylyn started chatting about their site again. “What went wrong?” was the question they both had, and after some brainstorming, the answer came.

They were limiting themselves. The site was made strictly for reviews and nothing more. This begged the question: “What if? What if we had a site that was dedicated to more than reviewing? What if this site could just be about… everything? Reading and writing and books and life and work and just… everything?”

And that was how How to Break a Blog was created.

The site title is inspired by a very, very cherished and favorite book shared by both Kaylyn and Brooke–How to Break a Boy by Laurie Devore. A book about a girl who challenges societies expectations about the way a woman should behave. A very angry, very sad, very emotionally heavy book.

Here, Kaylyn and Brooke are challenging the definition of a blog. Here, there isn’t just one niche–there are several. Brooke and Kaylyn are excited to share this blogging journey with the rest of the world and see how far it takes them.
